I want to recommend it, but...

I purchased this laptop during the Christmas/Boxing Day sale, and this review is based on about 2 weeks of use. Overall, this laptop is very good even though I gave it a 3 star rating and would recommend it with hesitation. -Build: The build quality is quite good, however I don't believe it is metal construction, but rather a painted plastic. This laptop has 2 exterior colours; the keyboard and bottom of the laptop is a silver finish, while the lid is a grey. You may not notice it much in the photos, but in person, it is a stark contrast in colour. It looks fine, but it kind of looks like 2 separate laptops pieced together. The back of the laptop screen has a slight curve to it (see photos) with rubber bumpers on them. This is important to note as when you lift the screen to normal viewing angles, the curved portion will make contact with the table (or whatever surface you're using) and will elevate the laptop from the back to a small degree. The rubber bumpers are there to protect the grey finish of the screen. There are 4 diagonally placed rubber bumpers on the bottom of the laptop to keep it nicely seated. Overall, the laptop is built well and looks premium (with the exception of the two-tone colouring). I did notice the screen lid has some ever-so-slight bends to it in 2 areas that run vertically that can only be noticed in dim lighting - I'm assuming it's to house the screen. -Battery: Non-removable battery, that is approximately 41Whr (40.286 from tests). In my 2 weeks usage, I have averaged anywhere from 4-5 hours before needing to plug in again, which is not great, given that my usage largely consists of web browsing, some Youtube, word documents/PowerPoint/article reading. There is a battery indicator light (charging = orange, charged = white) on the side of the laptop next to the plug. The battery charges from around 7-100% in about 1.5 to 2 hours. -Speakers: Phenomenal. Not much else you can say about the speaker quality. They're Bang & Olufsen (B&O); they're loud, crisp and don't distort at any volume. They're dual speakers which fire upward. You can easily hear music coming from the drivers standing 20 feet away. Impressive. -Typing: The keyboard is very good. Keys are smooth/untextured, with a good amount of travel. There is a dedicated number pad on the right side which is great. The caps lock button has a light indicator on it, but the number lock button doesn't. This is a Canadian keyboard, so don't be shocked when you see French accented letters on the keyboard. (You can switch between French and English using ctrl+shift, in case you accidentally trigger French). The area where you rest your hands is slightly textured, and seems to be a little rougher than the rest of the laptops surfaces. Nothing bad, but different. -Mouse: The mouse is a bit finicky at times, but good for the most part. It has good gesture control (two and three fingers), but the buttons are integrated into the touch area, and they aren't so responsive at times. In order to guarantee a left or right click, you have to click the far left or right corner of touchpad, respectively. if it's not the extreme corners, you may not get the click you intended. Sometimes the mouse is unresponsive, and sometimes the mouse disappears when moving it about. I have the most up-to-date drivers. The mouse also doesn't register clicks on certain websites (ie; slideshow on a site) (using the buttons or touchpad click), but the website will respond appropriately when using the touch screen or the arrow buttons. -Screen: Really nice touch screen for the most part. It is a full HD, LED, IPS panel with narrow bezels and a webcam up top. It gets reasonably bright and fairly dim when needed using keyboard controls. Images are sharp, videos look great; the darks are very dark and the colours pop quite nicely. White on maximum brightness looks good, but its not even across the screen (ie; the lower left of the screen is more tinted that the other corners of the screen). The touch screen works well, but I recommend calibrating it using Windows 10 built in software. After calibrating, the screen was detecting touches as it should. -Ports: Tons of accessibility here. There is an ethernet port (many laptops no longer include this), SD card, headphone jack, HDMI, USB-C and 2 regular USB. I didn't have a chance to use all the ports, but the HDMI, and USB's worked as expected. There is no DVD/CD drive in this model. -Software: Comes with some bloatware such as McAfee antivirus, and HP Support Assistant, which is quite convenient. It keeps your machine updated which I like. Also allows you to connect with someone via text chat for technical support, has trouble shooting features, tells you about your warranty, laptop specs, etc. It's really nice. The only issue I have had with it thus far is that it keeps telling me to update my graphics card driver, which I have now multiple times. After successfully updating the driver several times, the Support app is not able to remove the driver update notification. On a side note, I also had issues with updating Windows 10, receiving an error repeatedly. This seems to be a common issue with laptop users. This is NOT an HP issue, but rather a glitch in Windows 10. It requires some workarounds, but it can be fixed if you do some google searching for the error that you get. -Laptop experience: Overall, I really enjoy this laptop. It is replacing a 6-year old Toshiba Satellite, and it is miles ahead of that. It boots up within a minute, and is ready to go within 90 seconds or so (after all apps have loaded). Applications open quickly with not many incidents of software lag - apps lagged during the initial setting up/windows update error, but not after that. The laptop does what I need to it to, and does it very well. I would give this laptop a 4/5 (deduct points for mouse and battery life), except I can't. -Why 3 stars: I can't score it higher than 3 stars or give it full recommendations because I have experienced a hardware issue. I have experienced, on several occasions, a very loud but beep-like sound coming from the base of the laptop. HP technical support have advised me to return the laptop stating an undiagnosed hardware issue. I ended up searching this online, and found some other HP Pavilion owners (late 2017) complaining of the same issue. I am unsure what the issue is, but I believe it is a defective HDD. Since it isn't a one-off occurrence, but rather has happened to multiple HP Pavilion users, the reliability of this laptop may not be the best with respect to its hard drive. For the reason, I cannot give it higher than 3 stars. I will be returning this laptop and looking for a non-Pavilion laptop as a result. I hope you found this helpful.
