    Average

This scanner may be OK for average work but for the upscale work it is not so good - it replaced my Scanjet 4890 because the 4890 with windows 7 you did not get the full functionality of the scanner. The G4050 is an average scanner - it does not scan multiple levels of original items well - it gives a lot of shadows - I often have 25 or more images to scan and I then spend .5-1.0 hours colour correcting each image so if you are looking for a pretty good match to your original forget it -also it is cumbersome to get it to save your scan in a specific format to a specific location - you need to reset the parameters for each scan unlike the 4890 - wish my 4890 had full functionality with windows 7

    Scanjet G4050

I bought this scanner to replace a previous HP Scanjet which we used for many years and which was absolutely first class. This G4050 certainly produces a good quality scan but it is miserably slow. It is is slow that when I first got it I thought nothing was happening. There is no reaction from the scanner. One would think it was not working. Only after almost two minutes does something happen. As I said - excellent scans but terrible software and such a tediously slow machine. Does HP have a faster machine?

    Unacceptable image quality

Scanned slides are unacceptably blurred regardless of resolution / enlargement / sharpening settings. Unable to use it.

Excellent success w/ slides; details on use

I bought this product to digitize about 5,000 slides. I had a little difficulty setting about becasue I had another HP scanner hooked up. But there tech support spent all the time I needed. I worked with two techs and both were excellent. I started with 900 slides of my mother-in-law. Many of her slides were Ektachrome and all but the reds were badly faded. It did an excellent job on those (as good as possible) and all others. I had some difficulty with dust just like everyone with old slides. I did the 900 slides (keeping about 600) in just a few long (8-12 hours) days. Since then I've done another 400 in just a couple of short days. It takes me three major steps for each group of 16 slides 1) the scanning process, 2) the editing process, and 3) the renaming process. I have to edit (Digital Image by Microsoft - now defunct) virtually every slide. I crop to 6x4 or 4x6 for most slides. Occasionally, I crop to 4x4. On some slides I have to lighten them (poor lighting in the original or shaded faces) and up the contrast a little to a lot on almost all of them. On most, I zoom in and delete spots. Most of the spotting is in sky or white areas or faces or a light wall behind. I can't see spots in multi-colored ares. I then go to My Pictures and change the title on each. I change it to "date, file box and slot location of physical slide, and subject." for example, 1962 06 00 D-21 Sandy's birthday party. For most slides I only know the month, so I use 00 for the day. I start with the year, month, and then day so the slides will be ordered by date. If I have a group of photos (like a party or a trip) I order them by adding a letter after the day. Then I can control the order. It's important to put the physicla location in the photo name in case you want to rescan at a higher resolution to print a photo. Overall, I've been quite pleased. I then burn a dvd and the family enjoys an old-time slide show. Scanner speed is excellent at 300 dpi and resolution is excellent for viewing on a 42" TV. Much of the time is spent in editing the digitized photos and renaming the photos. Those steps would be the same for any scanner.
